The inside story of the Pfizer vaccine: ‘a once-in-an-epoch windfall’

"you could have it ranging up to $1,000 a dose"

"There’s a significant opportunity for those margins to improve"

"we saved the world"

"to say that they are wielding their power fairly, openly, with a sense of compassion, is manifestly untrue.”

“I think it’s immoral for anybody to profiteer to the extent that has happened out of a serious crisis for humanity as a whole.”

Skog

This big brown bear always greets you with open arms. Cuddly like no other and with a lovely giant stomach where you can feel safe resting - in other words, a real softy.

Quality of the 'Economist'

‘Cosmo’ for Capitalists

"It was always a dull stupid paper even when it was honest. But to read sophistical arguments in no better style than Wilson’s is a task I would not condemn a dog to."

Does anything happen in these books?

itemised

"It is what a different postwar theoretical philosophy called redemption; all these insignificant moments of an insignificant daily life are here redeemed, by the ordinary, undistinctive sentences which write them down. They have not been transformed, or lent some higher meaning; they remain what they were before, transient and of no particular interest. Nor are they lifted into the timeless eternity of classical literature, posterity and the canon: you can dip into them wherever you like and they will not be any more quotable..."

"...this ‘being-for-the-reading-other’ makes for a new kind of otherness"

"You’re famous French detective Antoine Saint Germain. You’ve gathered the suspects in one room (as you do) to announce the culprit. The only problem is that you have no idea who is actually guilty."

Ducks

An amateur mistake, surely. It is common knowledge that Gloranthan Ducks are death-worshipping berserkers: their terrible wraith is without equal in Dragon Pass.

Depart, I say, and let us have done with you.

“You have sat too long here for any good you have been doing. Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go.”

For heaven’s sake man, go!

Analysis followed through to conclusions

"This particular operation means to render unthinkable the idea that people could arrive at revolutionary politics via a clear-headed analysis followed through to conclusions. Instead they must be in the grip of some hidden compulsion which they obey relentlessly, all the while insisting that this obedience is freedom."

"A Russian officer maybe?"

"Do you know my parents?"

"Are they famous?"

Elena nodded. "My father was a Russian officer maybe, I think, and Mama comes from a famous Cossack family. They're all soldiers!"

"A Russian officer maybe?" I raised an eyebrow.

"Well, Mama met him when she was dressed as a man and joined the Cossack host. He was very surprised, I think," Elena shrugged. "Mama says he died of shock, leaving me as a present. But I think he probably ran away because Mama is so fierce!" She looked proud rather than distressed at this prospect.

I blinked down at the little cabin girl, rather at loss as to how I should respond. "That's... nice." I hazarded, and she nodded enthusiastically.

Modern Irish Literature

"Ireland has less of a tradition of literary realism than England, though for an English critic to say so may require a degree of diplomacy. It may sound like saying that Ireland is deficient in realism in the same way that a nation might be deficient in hospitality or human rights. This is because realism is one of those terms which can be both normative and descriptive, like ‘nature’ or ‘culture’. It can mean, neutrally, the kind of art which aims for verisimilitude, or it can mean one which succeeds in penetrating to the truth of how things are. Realism can refer to the representational mode of an art form, or to its cognitive effect... ‘Realistic’ is a value term, whereas ‘realist’ is not, or not necessarily."

Merit? What an obscene notion

“Working-class students are more likely to enter college with the notion that the purpose of higher education is learning in the classrooms, and invest their time and energy accordingly...”
Why ‘pedigree’ students get the best jobs

Merit? What an obscene notion! Everyone knows what truly counts is the divine right of kings.

The two things that almost killed Big Bird

First, Big Bird avoided the Challenger disaster. Next, it survived Mitt Romney.
